The clerkenwell tales is the latest example of ackroyds virtuoso mastery of his subject matter the seattle times a gripping thriller which also happens to be wonderfully full of engaging historical detail and conversation enhancing worlds like hopharlot. The clerkenwell tales is an historical novel by english writer peter ackroyd first published in 2003 plot summary the novel is set in london in the year 1399 a year of revolt revolution and religious conspiracy. The clerkenwell tales by peter ackroyd chatto windus 1599 pp213 religious extremism suicide bombings and an invading army known only through a veil of propaganda and conspiracy theories . I quite enjoyed the clerkenwell tales set out in a similar way to the canterbury tales which i did some of for a level english lit it tells the story of events in a community in the clerkenwell area of london at the end of the 14th century. The clerkenwell tales is set in chaucerian times and chaucer is an obvious influence on the work ackroyd writes in prose but from the title to the presentation short chapters each focussed on one of the characters to the characters themselves theres extensive borrowing from chaucers own canterbury tales
